CHAPTER 23 - What Next?

Hugh shook Megan awake.

He smiled and kissed her. "Aled is at the door; he says there is a man with a cart leaving for Drogheda within the hour."

"Drog where?"

"It is a town twelve leagues to the north."

Megan pulled back the covers, forgetting she was still naked.

Hugh stood there staring at her.

"Hugh," she snapped, covering up with her hands.

"Sorry," he said. "But you are so beautiful, I can't take my eyes off you."

He was so cute, Megan couldn't be mad at him; despite the fact he could have impregnated her, to be fair that was more her fault than his.

"Last night was truly wondrous," he added.

That was sweet, she thought, but given their current situation, now was not the time for her tough knight's squire to go all puppy dog, loved up on her.

Megan swung her legs off the bed and yelped.

"Is there something wrong?" He asked anxiously.

She smiled through gritted teeth and pointed at his crotch. "No, my body is just not used to that thing."

Slowly, a look of understanding spread across his face, and it morphed into a proud smile. Honestly, boys!

"Now turn around," Megan said.

"But, I have already seen you naked."

She responded to this undeniable logic by twirling her finger in the air until he acquiesced.

Megan stood up and moments later something dripped down he inner thigh. She glanced down — ewh gross.

She looked around the room; in the table there was a porcelain bowl with a jug next to it, along with a washcloth.

"I'll meet you down there," she said. "I'm just going to clean up."

Missus Flanigan greeted Megan and Hugh with a knowing smile. "Morning my lovelies." Did you sleep well?"

Megan smiled and nodded.

"Would you like the same for breakfast as your friends?"

Megan looked across at Aled and Charlie tucking into eggs and ham. When Charlie saw her, he waved furiously.

"Yes please," she replied.

"I'll bring you over some bread and beer to start with."

Not that Megan wasn’t grateful, but she could have murdered a decent cup of coffee.

They took a seat.

Aled looked up from his eggs. "Good, you're up. Did you have a good night?"

"What?" Megan snapped.

"A good night's sleep," Aled added quickly, as he and Charlie giggled. Megan gave Hugh a sharp glance. Had he said anything? He flashed her an innocent looking smile.

"So, Aled, this man; what's his name?" she asked.

"Mister O'Neill."

"And this town."

"Drogheda?"

"Is it big?"

"Sounds like it's a decent size."

Megan’s mind was racing. "So, it has a harbor then?"

Aled smiled. "So, I'm led to believe."

"When is this Mister O'Neill leaving?"

"Eight o'clock sharp he said."

Megan glanced at the ornamental clock that had pride of place on the mantle above the fireplace. It was seven forty-five.

Missus Flanigan appeared with two plates. "There you go my dears."

Megan nodded her thanks and got stuck in; they couldn't afford to miss their ride.

🕮

"No luggage?" Mister O'Neill barked. He was a stocky man with ruddy cheeks.

Megan shook her head.

"Hmpf. Well, I can take ya as far as Drogheda; it’ll be a shilling each, and you buy your own food.
