No need to waste time working my way up the ranks when I can start at the top. Preston seems the type to run his show with a hands-on approach.

Dollars to donuts, he’s got the information I’m looking for. And if not, it will at least point me in the right direction.

Moving through the halls, I’ve got to control my footfalls, keeping the taps and thunks to a minimum. There are no cameras inside to worry about. Again, the cost-benefit analysis works in my favor.

As I make my way to the second floor, I realize this is the kind of lax security that could have been exploited when putting the job together for Roger. Let’s keep that bit of info as another card in my hand when face to face with Mr. Wallace.

Preston’s office door is locked, but the barrier proves no more worthy than the back entrance. I’m inside in a flash, easing the latch closed before anyone spots me around.

I make my way toward the row of filing cabinets when an orange glow catches my eye.

“Of course,” I whisper with a chuckle.

Underneath Preston’s desk sits a big, beefy, black plastic computer tower. Not the kind packed with horsepower and performance, the type that was common before manufacturers started switching to sleeker designs and more compact parts.

Preston isn’t a bleeding-edge guy, so it makes sense that he’s still running a chunky boy like this. Not a fan of laptops either, which is good for me. He most likely has what I’m looking for in this behemoth.

I thumb the power button of the nineteen-inch flat screen, poised over the keyboard to prepare to fight the security protocols. Only, I’m greeted by the operating system’s desktop, cluttered with files and icons.

Wow, it’s chaotic. Almost more intimidating than high-end password protection.

All it takes is a quick search of the keywords I’m looking for, especially with the information about the shipment in the failed highjacking that put Wallace behind bars.

“Would you look at that?”

It’s almost like the information is gift-wrapped. If I didn’t know better, I would think this is a trap. It’s too easy. All relevant files, including personal notes, are stashed in the same folder.

Shaking my head, it’s hard to suppress the smile as I open the files.

“That was very considerate of you, Mr. Lighthouse.” I might be back in time to get some sleep before resuming my investigation in the morning.

The second note pops open, revealing four names. My finger hovers over the mouse button, reading the first three. Matthew Williams, Justin Ruiz, and Christopher Thomas.

The fourth I don’t recognize. Jordan Crossley.

The note has only a few sentence fragments, painting a picture of pain and blame. Preston saw Matthew, Justin, and Chris as the men responsible for his son’s death. But who’s Jordan?

I copy everything onto a flash drive and close the folder, setting everything back to where it was initially. I cover my tracks, removing the opened files from the recently opened menu and turning the monitor off.
