Chapter 24

Kenzie

“What the hell is wrong with your town, Kenz?”

“What do you mean?” I ask Edin, stifling a yawn. It’s no use. It also doesn’t help that she knows what I’m doing anyway. Not easy to hide facial features on video calls unless I pull the phone away, and then she pesters me with questions of what I don’t want her to see.

“How can you possibly be tired? Didn’t you say you slept, like, twelve hours last night?” Then she gives a sly grin. “Oh wait. You spend every night with Trevor now. Is that what you meant by ‘sleeping’? Because all you had to say was, ‘My sexy boyfriend and I were busy all night long.’ I’d totally understand. You know that.”

I wish I could laugh. “I haven’t been sleeping well. Fitful nights. Dozing at work. No energy to work out. Trevor made me go to bed right after dinner.” I stifle another yawn. “Anyway, what’s wrong with the Falls?”

“Oh, that. At least five people have suggested I make tomato soup cupcakes, just in the last hour. There have been twenty-three suggestions in the past two days. Yes, I counted. What’s up with that?”

Now I laugh for real. “Mrs. Abernathy made them every August for her son’s birthday, even when he moved away. Mrs. A died last year. Knox won’t make them for the diner, and Capelli’s has never served cupcakes. With your brand-new bakery, you’re the next best thing to Mrs. Abernathy.”

“Oh. Now I feel like shit for bitching about them behind their backs.”

“It’s okay. They’ll do something different next month to annoy you, and things will be back to normal.”

Edin laughs in return. “Very true.” She pauses. Her facial features almost dim a little. “So this lack of sleep. It’s because of Cal.” This is not asked as a question.

I nod. “He texts me good night, good morning, good everything. He’s there when it’s supposed to be my alone time in my own home. He always wants to be around me.”

“I don’t even believe him.” She scoffs.

“What?”

“That prick seriously thinks it’s as easy as camping out in your apartment so you’ll just pick up right where you left off.”

I flinch. “It might not be as bad as that. Maybe.”

“It is.” Edin’s clearly confident in her answer. “You’re with Trevor. Cal knows this. He just thinks you’ll drop everything in your life to take him back, since he’s the king and all.” She rolls her eyes.

“You don’t know Cal.” But even as I say this, I have to admit that while Edin has never met him, she definitely knows him. She knows exactly what he’s like and how he thinks.

“So introduce me.”

I balk with a pitiful excuse all ready. “Edes, you’re one of my best friends, but I’m not sure you’ll really understand all that is Callum. He’s . . . complicated.”

“Aren’t we all? I don’t buy that as an answer. It’s just a cop-out. You know that I understand him, and you don’t want to admit it out loud.
