Chapter 14

Betrayal

Selasine could tell that the light piercing his eyes was not Miranda’s miracle light but the sun’s. The sun! Just moments ago, he would have sworn that he would never see the sun again. He opened his eyes, staring at a beautiful morning sky with deep hues of blue. “Wait, is this the other side?” he thought. Sitting up, he found himself on the beaches of Yendralia. White sand spread out before him with tall purple mountains spiring behind. As he collected his senses, he looked around frantically.

August and Erk lay only a few feet away, still unconscious. A familiar, musical voice piped behind him, “I’m glad you’re awake, bishop!”

He turned suddenly to see Miranda sitting on a grassy hill under a palm tree about fifteen feet away. He tried to get up, but the world around him spun too quickly, forcing him to stay planted on his bottom in the sand. “Are you okay?” he asked, “What about the others?”

She smiled softly. “Everyone is fine, it seems. I’m so happy we made it out of there together. I . . .” she trailed off and looked at her other two sleeping companions. “I was so afraid of being alone again that all I could wish for was the last time we were safe. Apparently, this was the last time we were actually safe,” she giggled as she gestured to the beach.

A moment later, August let out a groan. “Is this how it feels to be dragon food?” he rumbled, having heard Miranda’s and Selasine’s voices. Erk also stirred, brushing sand off his jacket as he sat up.

The pirate lord looked around, disoriented. “How in the Abyss did we end up back here? I thought for sure we were dead,” Erk said, trying to piece together events.

Miranda’s lips tightened. “I suddenly felt the mana flow into me when Ezelbrecht threatened to keep me. I was so scared of being alone there forever with that creature. The more they spoke of my power, the more I was sure I could at least get us back here safely. So I wished, and I kept wishing and,” she smiled. “And we’re all okay!”

As the companions woke up, they gathered close to Miranda under the tree on the hill. Since she was seated, the other three joined her cross-legged on the ground. She looked at peace, but the normal, innocent way she looked at the world was gone. Selasine could feel his heart grow heavy as he sat beside her and took her into his arms while she sat motionless. She leaned into his embrace but otherwise did not react.

“I am so sorry, Miranda. I did not know the truth about your parents,” he began.

She breathed deeply, her radiant blue eyes looking nowhere. Her braids were severely frayed, strands of hair blowing carelessly in the wind and spilling around her shoulders. It was clear to everyone that taking Miranda to Olvidado was the right decision, but it was also a pivotal moment in her life.
