Sometimes you have to get creative to get your gear to your next resupply. In Nepal it was common to see worn-out shoes in the gutters in town and even sometimes in the backcountry. Many of the field repairs I do will last the life of the product. However, if there is a critical failure, like a shoe blowout, the repair only needs to make it until my next resupply stop, especially on hikes in the United States. This can be anywhere from one day to ten days of hiking (an average of 30 to 300 miles). I can then continue to use my nearly dead shoes or pick up some new ones in town, depending on how the repair is holding up. Although most fixes will last a long time, keep in mind that anything that needs to be repaired only has to perform until the next town stop.

TIP: If you are carrying dental floss, you can use it in place of thread for repairs.

My Simple Repair Kit

• About 3 to 5 feet of duct tape wrapped around my fuel bottle or trekking pole so that I don’t have to carry the roll of duct tape
