I promised my mom a weekend day, and so I give it to her. She and my dad have a conversation about surprises and how they don’t really work well when co-parenting, but it’s mild in the scheme of things. He assures her he was planning to spend the day with Uncle Mike getting started on their big outdoor project, and that he’ll see me when he sees me. So guiltily on both of our parts, my mom and I spend the day together.

We start with mani/pedis. This was something we both laughed our butts off at when we first got to Connecticut and found out that it was totally normal for moms to take their twelve-year-old daughters, and much younger, actually, to get their nails done at like a hundred dollars per person. My mom had never had a manicure in her life much less was she keen on getting her young daughter one. But Craig insisted this was what was done, so we got on board. Now it’s our norm, I guess.

After a late lunch, a drive around town for nostalgia’s sake, and a trip to the grocery store, we’re both ready to get home.

My mom pulls a head of lettuce out of one of her canvas bags. “Are you eating with us tonight?”

“I’m still full from lunch. That sandwich was huge.”

“I know, me too.”

“What are you making Craig?” I ask.

She lets out a deep breath, gazing at the groceries. “Maybe those premade enchiladas from the deli.”

“Go for it. You’ve had a long day.”

“Ladies of luxury get tired too, I guess.” She rolls her eyes with a smile. My mom has never gotten used to her rich wife status.

I finish helping her with the groceries and then head to my room, texting Sophia and Blaire as I go.

What’s up tonight? Work tomorrow. Yuck!

It’s a few minutes before a text from Blaire pops up.

S and me at her house. Come over.

I wish there was an exclamation point at the end of that short sentence, but I don’t panic about that. It’s been a long time since Blaire and I exchanged texts. This could be the way she texts all the time.

When?

Now.

Oh, fantastic. They’ve been hanging for a while, obviously. I was an afterthought. Not even. I was a forced thought because I texted them. And now I know the delay in response was so they could chat about whether or not they wanted me around. It’s not like I can say no though at this point. I reached out to them.

Cool.

Two can play the no exclamation point game.

When I get to Sophia’s house, her mom greets me at the door and directs me to Sophia’s room. Her door is a few inches open, so I peek in, knocking softly. “Hey, hey.”

“Hey,” Blaire says. “Come on in.”

Sophia smiles at me without really saying anything. They both scoot around on the bed so I can have a place to sit, so I plop down. “What’s up?”

“We’ve been doing these clipboards.” Blaire
