Chapter Fourteen

Gabby

I carried my six-dollar coffee into the lounge feeling a little pep in my step. Life was good. I was combatting the loneliness with lots of thoughts of our reunion. We were going to be together soon. He was working on coming up with a plan for his business while looking to hire another assistant to work in the office on his behalf. The man was busy, but we still had plenty of time to talk to one another.

“Good morning,” I said to Tammy.

“You are just way too cheery for your own good,” she laughed.

“I’m happy,” I said. “Like, happier than should be legal.”

“I take it your visit was good.”

This was our first shift together since I got back three days ago. “It was amazing,” I said. “Absolutely amazing.”

“You are smitten,” she said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen someone so smitten.”

“I’ve never felt like this before,” I told her. “I keep telling myself this is just an infatuation.”

“I told you, this is what love feels like,” she said. “This is why I love falling in love. That feeling of euphoria you have right now is addicting. It’s just too bad it doesn’t last.”

I frowned. “You don’t think it will last?”

“I think you’re in the honeymoon phase,” she said. “I’m not saying it isn’t going to last, but the butterflies and the sparks that fly when you kiss do tend to fade. At least, for me they did. That’s when I know it’s over.”

“Gee, Tammy, you’re so full of inspiration,” I said dryly. “You’re the one who told me to go for it. You encouraged me to let myself fall in love.”

“I know, I know,” she said. “I’m not trying to poo poo on your parade. I’m happy for you. What’d you guys do?”

“Not really much of anything. We hung out at his house. It’s a really, really nice house. We did a little shopping. It was so nice to be with him in the real world. It’s like we are taking baby steps into the world. Being on the island, we were insulated and isolated. I had doubts about whether or not we would actually make it in the real world.”

“And now you think you will?” she asked.

“Absolutely,” I said. “Well, I think we will, and he thinks we will, but his ex, not so much.”

She rolled her eyes. “No ex wants to see their ex be happy with a new lover.”

“Yeah, well, she’s taking it up a notch. He found out out she stole money from him throughout their marriage and then hid it to keep it from being found during the divorce. She used that money to buy the island we stayed on.”

“What?” she asked with surprise.

“She bought the island. It’s just another way for her to fuck with him.”

“You have a bit of a situation on your hands, it sounds like,” she said. “Does she know where you work?”

“No,” I shook my head. “She doesn’t know anything about me. I’m not the one she wants.
