I rub at my throat, willing it to relax.

But it doesn't work.

Over the years, I've returned to the cabin, to the ruins of what once was. It was a life I let myself envision for six short months. A life in which I'd give up everything I ever worked for to live alongside a man who portrayed everything I stood against.

But this tiny little baby was growing inside me, and for her, I'd have broken all my rules. All the twisted oaths I'd taken.

I've returned to the cabin before but never entered it. I didn't come inside to see the damage caused.

My feet take me to what would have been my daughter's crib, and I sink to my knees. I didn't eat much today, but I had enough to drink. My muscles twitch as I fight to hold back the bile in my throat.

It hurts to be in here.

I can't breathe, knowing that my baby is gone. Even after all these years, this room makes it real.

"I wanted to clean it out—" Víctor begins, but my sobs interrupt him. I didn't even notice that he followed me in here.

There isn't a lot of space for me to express myself in my life these days, so numbness comes easily. I can't see through the tears, but I feel Víctor's arms lift me from the floor. He carries me out of the cabin, and I attempt to breathe again as he sets me back on my feet.

And that's where I fall to the ground once more.

This time, Víctor joins me. He hoists me up on his lap. I should protest, but when his arms wrap around me, the weakness inside fades.

"I need you to leave," I say into his chest. I hope his heart hears the pain in my voice. "You'll break me if you stay. What are you doing back in San Ricardo? Don't you have a kingdom to run now?"

"I want to take you away," he says, avoiding a direct answer to my questions. I push to free myself from his embrace, but he holds me tight. He won't let go. And I don't want him to. "Not Guadalajara. But… San Diego. Come with me. For a weekend."

I left my guests unattended back home to sneak around with Víctor at the cabin. I can't leave for the weekend. Seth is busy in LA because the British royals are visiting Hollywood for photo ops. He won't be home until Monday.

San Diego is close to home.

I can go with him, away from the cabin. Perhaps we could finally talk. Get this grief over with.

And then I'd take a cab back to San Ricardo and be home before midnight.
