Chapter 10
Mrs. Lester came to the shop for the next week. Though she and Mr. Lester didnât directly speak of my illness, I told them I wasnât feeling well, and the doctor suggested I rest. I whispered to Mrs. Lester that Dr. Maxwell had given me something for cramps. She smiled knowingly and mouthed the words âOh. Yer monthly.â With a pat to my hand, that was the end of the discussion. Both she and her husband pitched in and everything ran so smoothly I wondered how I ever did without them.
The doctor stopped in one day to purchase a bouquet for his wife. I was in the back room and heard him ask Mrs. Lester if I was feeling better. I instantly made an appearance, closing the curtains that divided the space just as Mrs. Lester was about to answer his question.
âGood afternoon, Doctor Maxwell.â I came up behind Mrs. Lester. âI heard you asking after me.â I slipped an arm around the older womanâs waist. âHow could I not be feeling better? Mrs. Lester here brings me the most delicious food. She says that itâs to build my strength, but I fear her good cooking may have me visiting the dressmaker. She orders me to rest when she sees a hint of exhaustion.â The sweet womanâs expression grew soft as I sang her accolades. âSheâs quite remarkable really. She does it all. Iâm going to try to convince her to stay on.â
Mrs. Lesterâs close-lipped smile lifted her apple cheeks. She gave me a quick nod. âYes, maâam. Iâd like that.â She turned to the good doctor. âIt was lovely to see you, sir. Iâll get yer wifeâs flowers now, if youâll excuse me.â
The doctor waited until Mrs. Lester went to prepare the bouquet before he spoke again.
âHow are you really feeling, Mavis? Any fever or unusual pain?â
âI'm quite well, actually. Thank you for checking on me.â
âOf course. Iâm glad youâre doing so well.â
The bells on the door interrupted us with their clanging as another customer entered. The doctorâs expression morphed from smile to scowl in an instant. It was Mr. Norris.
âWell, hello there, Phineas. I didnât expect to see you here. Thereâs a nasty stomach bug going around, I hear. I thought youâd be up to your eyeballs with patients.â
âThereâs something going around. Some are calling the malady the grip. Iâm uncertain the strain of virus behind it, but it comes on suddenly. I suspect tainted food, but it could be something else. My wife has been more than accommodating keeping my dinner warm every night. I thought it would be nice to surprise her with some flowers to show my appreciation.â
âI would think that accommodating her husband was understood when she took wedding vows but, yes, to your credit, Iâm sure sheâll be surprised.â
Mrs. Lester appeared with the bouquet. âWill this do, sir? I know your missus likes white blooms, so I put in as many as would fit.â
âTheyâre lovely. Sheâll be thrilled.â
âAs well she should, spending good money on a wife is a waste,â Mr.
