The statue of St Maurice in Magdeburg Cathedral (c. AD1240), with the saint wearing the long-sleeved mail hauberk and a coif. The sculpted features of Mauriceâs face and the colouring unambiguously identify him as a black man. In fact the name âMauriceâ is derived from Latin and means âlike a Moorâ. Maurice was a legionary commander in the Thebaid region of lower Egypt, an early centre of Christianity. He was martyred after he disobeyed an order issued by the Roman emperor Maximian to suppress a Christian uprising in Gaul.
