The statue of St Maurice in Magdeburg Cathedral (c. AD1240), with the saint wearing the long-sleeved mail hauberk and a coif. The sculpted features of Maurice’s face and the colouring unambiguously identify him as a black man. In fact the name ‘Maurice’ is derived from Latin and means ‘like a Moor’. Maurice was a legionary commander in the Thebaid region of lower Egypt, an early centre of Christianity. He was martyred after he disobeyed an order issued by the Roman emperor Maximian to suppress a Christian uprising in Gaul.
