Challenge the data, and actively look for information to see if you can disprove your hypothesis.

Leverage strategies to become aware of and to mitigate bias, and then make a decision.

T he Apply phase is the most important phase of the entire process as it is ultimately the point at which a decision is made. However, there are multiple steps that should be followed before this decision is made, and these steps often get overlooked. Many individuals and organizations jump from the Analyze phase to directly making a decision based on the analysis. However, it is during the Apply phase that you want to orient yourself to the data and information obtained so far as they relate to the problem or question being asked. You will want to apply your personal experiences, your intuition, and your mental models to the analysis and form a hypothesis for your decision. You will then want to challenge the data and your assumptions and actively look for information to see if you can disprove your hypothesis. This will require you to be aware of and to mitigate any potential cognitive bias. You will also want to review your hypothesis with a cognitively diverse team and make sure everyone shares their thought process. This involves teammates trying to mitigate groupthink and focusing on how to help each other unlearn outdated mental models. If you cannot review your hypothesis with a cognitively diverse team, you can try reframing and playing devil’s advocate with your own thought process. After all these steps, you can then make your decision.
