“More potato salad, Jake?” Rachel held out the bowl. “You seem to like it.” She smirked.

Jake took it from her and helped himself to another spoonful. “Okay, never thought I’d say this, but… Sharon, your potato salad beats my mama’s, hands down.” It was the best he’d ever tasted. And as for the chicken, the spicy sweet potato wedges… It was all perfect.

Sharon beamed. “Aw, thank you, sweetheart.” She glanced across the table at Liam. “I got déjà vu here.”

Liam smiled, and nudged Jake with his arm. “Caleb said the very same thing. Only thing was, he looked so guilty after he said it, we all felt sorry for him.”

“I can understand that,” Sharon said. “It’s only natural to take pride in your momma’s cooking. I expect he felt like he was betraying her. Of course, he wasn’t, but…” She held out the bowl of bread rolls. “Would you like another?”

Jake stared at it for a second, debating internally. Finally, he nodded and took one. Lord, the smell when he opened it up. Heaven.

“Caleb always said you were good with your hands,” Will commented. Jake liked the look of Will, who resembled Liam very strongly. Mind you, all of Liam’s family are so good-lookin’. His mom was a brunette, shoulder length, the tips of her hair curling under just enough to give the strands life when she moved. Jake loved the hint of sun-kissed red that shone through when the sunlight hit it just right. Rachel had her mom’s facial bone structure, but she wore her hair in long box braids, pulled together to one side at the top, while the rest cascaded down her back and over her shoulders. The style showed off her face, and made her appear taller, not that she needed it: not one of the kids was under five feet ten. And as for Tony, their dad? Lord, he had to be six feet tall, starting to thin out on top, but with graying stubble along his jawline. His eyes reminded Jake of Liam’s: they had that same warmth.

More than the way they looked, Jake liked their manners, their easy-going attitude, the way they interacted with each other, and the care they took to make sure he was happy.

Jake could see why Caleb had liked spending time with them. They were good people.

“Jake?”

With a start, Jake blinked. “Sorry. I must’ve zoned out there for a sec. What were you sayin’?”

“I said Caleb always mentioned how good you were with your hands.”

Jake narrowed his gaze. “Tell me he didn’t show you a photo of me with a plastic saw.” When Will bit his lip, Jake rolled his eyes. “Good Lord. Why did he have to go an’ do that?”

“He was proud of you,” Tony said simply. “He said he didn’t have a creative bone in his body, but he reckoned that was okay, because while you’d gotten all the creative bits…” He paused, his eyes twinkling.

Jake sensed there was a punchline coming. “Yeah? What did he get?”

“All the good looks.
