âWhatâs going on?â I ask, walking in the door and seeing my mom hugging Nova.
âEaston!â Nova yanks away from my mom and lunges at me, hugging me like she hasnât seen me in years.
My mom smiles at me. âShe was very worried about you.â
I drop the duffle bag and hug her back. âWhy were you worried?â
âBecause you took forever to get here.â She sniffles. âI thought something happened to you.â
I pull back to look at her and see she was crying. âIâm fine. Iâm right here. I just went slow so it took forever.â
âHow are the roads?â my mom asks.
âBad. Really slick. I parked the Jeep on the street so I could plow the driveway.â
âThanks, honey. Thatâd be a big help.â
âYou didnât have to get my stuff,â Nova says to me. âYou couldâve waited.â
âItâs all you have, and I didnât want anything to happen to it.â
âDo you need help getting the rest?â my mom asks.
âThatâs it,â I say. âThatâs all she had.â
My mom looks down at the small blue duffle bag, her hand going to her mouth. âI need to go upstairs.â She takes off.
âWhat is going on with her? Sheâs acting really strange.â
âI donât know.â Nova looks up at me. âIâm just glad youâre okay.â
I smile at her. âWhy are you up? You should be in bed.â
âYour mom said you left. I had to go find you.â
âIn a blizzard?â I laugh. âI donât think my mom wouldâve been okay with that.â
âShe wouldnât let me leave.â
Ted would have. Novaâs dad wouldâve too. They wouldnât care if she went out in a blizzard and died. This is strange for her, having people care about her and take care of her. Whenever my mom tries to help Nova or offers to do something for her or acts concerned for her, Nova looks confused like she canât figure out why my mom would do that.
âIs that why my mom was hugging you? To keep you from leaving?â
âNo. It was because I was scared. I thought you were hurt.â
âI drive in this stuff all the time. Iâm used to it.â
âWhat about Tedâs car?â
âIâll have to go back with a shovel and dig it out. Itâs buried in snow.â
âWell, thanks for getting the bag.â
I pick it up. âLetâs go take it downstairs.â
We go to the basement and into her room.
âHow was the fashion show?â I set her duffle bag on the bench at the end of the bed.
âIt was okay. I had no idea people had that many shoes.â
âMost people donât. Jennaâs obsessed with them so she buys them all the time. Sheâs the same way with clothes.â
âShe knows a lot about fashion. Maybe she could do that for a living someday.â
âI canât see her ever working a job. Sheâd rather find some rich guy to marry so she could shop all day.â
Nova gets into bed, looking exhausted. Her eyes close as her head hits the pillow.
âNova?â I sit beside her. She doesnât answer. I think sheâs already asleep. I kiss her forehead. âIâll check on you later.
