SEPTEMBER
LUKE
I throw back the glass of whiskey before pouring myself another. Drinking away my misery isnât working out like Iâd planned. If anything, I feel worse.
I made sure that Victoria got back to my castle and settled in a room, but I havenât spoken to her since our fight. Sheâs asleep in a random room somewhere within these walls. She refused to sleep in my bed.
I just got Victoria back, and weâre already at odds.
Iâm a fucking idiot.
I should go to her. Beg her forgiveness.
But thereâs the whole matter of her thoughts about the reaper.
A snarl rips through my chest at the idea of her with him. Iâd kill him before he so much as touched her. My hands clench the glass so hard it cracks. âFuck!â I throw the glass, and it shatters on the stone.
Not if thatâs what she chose.
A promise was made not long ago, and I intend to keep it. I told Victoria Iâd never bend her will, and I wonât. If she chooses a life that doesnât include me, Iâll walk away.
âSatan, can I be of service?â Lilithâs smooth voice calls from a dark corner.
She slinks out from the shadows, wearing nothing more than stickers over her nipples and a red G-string.
âLil, what the hell are you wearing?â
âWhat? This?â She feigns innocence when we both know damn well what sheâs up to.
Weâve done this dance for millennia. She knows when Iâm tense and in need of release, and every time, she comes willingly to serve. This getup is precisely what sheâd wear for a night of losing ourselves in each other.
Those days have long been over. Since the first night I saw Victoria in that cemetery, I havenât been able to touch another woman. Lilith included. She knows this, and itâs been a source of contention since.
Sheâs been relentless in her pursuit to persuade me back to her bed, but itâll never happen. Not when Iâve had Victoria and know what love feels like.
âShe saw her own thoughts, Satan. She wants him. Give in. I can make you forget it all,â she purrs, running her red-painted nails down my chest. I bat her away.
âEnough, Lilith. You know itâs not happening.â
âAnd why, Satan? Because of her? That angel?â she sneers. âShe doesnât understand you and she never will.â
âI donât care. I love her.â
âShe wonât choose you. She canât, and we both know it.â
Her words hit hard, and the need to lash out at someone canât be contained.
I jump from the throne, prowling toward her, and based on her wide eyes, she knows sheâs overstepped.
âWhatâs happening here?â Zeke asks, coming into the room with Michael on his tail.
I brought them here to begin the preparations for taking back the throne and for Victoriaâs departure to the reaper kingdom.
âWhat does it look like?â
âLike youâre about to strike a woman.â
âDemon,â I correct. âAnd for the record, I was not going to hit her.â
âIn her case, Iâd permit it,â Michael sneers, eyeing Lilith like sheâs a rat carrying the plague.
âLeave us, Lilith,â I command, and she scurries off.
