Chapter Twenty-Three

Three weeks later

Thursday early morning

January 30 — 1:16 a.m. MST

Denver, Colorado

The weeks passed. Margaret returned from her trip to the Diné reservation. She joined Alex and Raz in reading and summarizing documents. They made sure and steady progress.

Given everything that was going on, no one mentioned that Alex should do more psychological work with hallucinogenics. Since there was no consensus on what would work the best, Alex refused to push forward.

January was always a slow month for them. Most of the Fey Team worked to clean up and finish work they’d started last year.

The team of programmers completed a rudimentary database. Luckily, Xavier was well enough to make the database robust enough to hold all of the information they’d acquired on Incendium Revivius. Xavier put the database on one of his secure, invisible servers. Leena and Dusty actually enjoyed putting things into the database, so they worked non-stop to get everything into the database.

The weeks flew by.

Dinner that night had included a conversation about heading to Northern Ireland to visit family. The question was would they prefer to visit Northern Ireland or spend a week on the gorgeous white beaches of Tanzania. Everyone took their usual sides. The elder Kellys wanted to go home to Belfast. The Hargreaves clan wanted the white sands and warm days at the beach.

Alex and John had discussed their options late into the night. They went to bed laughing about the conflict. As usual, John fell asleep immediately while Alex stared at the ceiling for a while before falling asleep.

Deep in sleep, Alex began to scream.

On the other side of the rooming house, Max began to scream a moment after Alex started.

“Alex, honey, wake up,” John said.

Caught in some horror, Alex kept screaming.

John shook her shoulder to wake her. Caught in her own private horror, she didn’t awaken. Through the wall, he heard the soft sounds of Wyatt trying to wake Max.

“He’s not waking,” Wyatt yelled to John.

Wyatt’s voice through the insulated wall was soft. John barely heard him over Alex’s screaming.

“She’s not, either,” John said. “Come on, Alex! Wake up.”

John heard Wyatt slap Max’s face, but Max continued screaming.

“Has this happened before?” Wyatt yelled.

“No!” John yelled back.

John jumped out of bed. He flipped off Alex’s covers and slapped the bottom of her feet. She kept screaming.

“I’m coming over!” John yelled.

“I’m here,” Wyatt said. He was carrying Max in his arms. As if they’d been in bed, Wyatt and Max were wearing boxer briefs. “Should I . . .”

“It’s better than nothing,” John said as he pulled on his pajama bottoms.

Wyatt tossed Max onto the bed. As if drawn by magic, Alex and Max moved to each other until they were tucked in balls around each other. It was only then that they stopped screaming. Now that Alex and Max weren’t screaming, they heard the sound of Joey and Máire crying over the baby monitor.

“I’m getting Ciarán,” Wyatt said.

“Call him,” John said and threw Wyatt his phone.

Wyatt nodded.

“What can we do?” Troy asked, appearing at the door with his sons.
