Barbecue Bloodbath

Cooking smells filled the air. But Damian Rzeszowski would soon turn a family gathering into a massacre….

Delicious barbecue smells wafted from garden to garden as the summer sunshine danced across the rooftops. The mouthwatering aromas were coming from 3a Victoria Crescent in St Helier - home to the Rzeszowski family, who'd come back from a two-week holiday in their native Poland at 8 am that day. They'd driven across Europe to France, then taken the ferry.

Damian, a hard-working carpenter, had met Izabela, a tall striking blonde, in her home town of Bydgoszcz, when he was completing his national service. In 2004 they moved to the Channel Island of Jersey - popular with Polish immigrants. They married there in 2005 and built a successful life for themselves.

Now it was 1.30pm on Sunday, August 14, 2011, and things were peaceful on their private road, at the end of which was a sign saying: ‘No parking, No thoroughfare, No dogs.’ Described as 'one of the safest places in the western world' - the area was an ideal place to raise a family.

Now, in the back courtyard of his flat, Damian, 30, was standing next to the barbecue, while his daughter Kinga, five, was sitting on a chair, enjoying a burger with her friend Julia De La Haye, also five. Julia’s care assistant mum. Marta, 34, was Izabela's best mate.

There were seven people in the courtyard all that day, including Kinga's two-year-old brother Kacper and Izabela's dad, Marek Garstka, 56, who was living with them while he worked in Jersey. According to neighbours, they were all tucking into the food and enjoying normal, friendly, lunchtime conversation.

'They were almost the perfect family,' said Marlena Bartus, a family friend.

But what outsiders didn't realise was that cracks had started appearing in Damian and Izabela's marriage three years earlier, when she'd struck up an online friendship with a Polish man in the USA. The birth of their son, Kacper, in 2010, gave their relationship a temporary boost. But it wasn't to last.

Damian’s colleagues had, however, noticed a change in Damian. Normally a sensitive, family man, who was always polite and a 'model worker’, by the spring of 2011, he seemed stressed, agitated and moody at work. Fellow carpenter Daniel Ferguson said: 'It became clear to me and others on the site that you shouldn't mess with him or he would blow up. In that last week he worked on the site he constantly looked like he was going to explode. He was always in a foul mood for no obvious reason.'

But the cracks in the marriage widened in June 2011, when Izabela, 30, confessed she'd had a two-month affair. Although not normally much of a drinker, Damian went on a bender and had a one-night stand with a woman he met in a bar.

Then, on 19 July, Izabela found him slumped in the flat after he'd taken an overdose of his anti-depressants and he was rushed to Jersey General Hospital.

It was a frightening jolt for the couple, and they decided to give their tattered marriage another shot.
