During the procedures, the flaws were the rule, not the exception. The search warrant had a mistake in my name, has the wrong date, and the scope of it was not respected.

As a result of about 8 hours in my apartment, there was a paper that is supposed to be the record of seized items which mentions that “many pendrives,” “many hard disk drives,” “many credit cards” were seized. There number of seized items was not included and that the integrity of the information generating a hash value of the contents of the media seized was something they obviously did not do.

I asked for a third-party independent review of the investigation and that was denied. It is a right that we all have in in any process of this kind. Requesting another opinion from somebody independent who can review all the things and see how they were done was denied by the prosecutor and judge. The police never preserved the real evidence, the systems of the medical provider, where the evidence in its original form, digital, was received and stored. The systems that were apparently “attacked” held the evidence in its logs that are in its original form in those systems. They did not even clone or make images of those systems with the evidence if there was such evidence.

In the file of the case, there are some pages with a printed copy of the supposed received email. That is not serious, that is not professional, that is not aligned with the due diligence that a criminal investigation is supposed to have.

I offered them to give them all my credentials, usernames, passwords, PINs, etc., to access to all seized equipment, all my encrypted devices, as well as my services online to speed up the process and to show them that there was nothing related to the supposed crime there, nor anything linked to any crime or illegal activity. I had nothing to hide so I decided to make them that offer (which is probably the dream of any digital forensics expert, you do not normally get that offer from somebody involved in a criminal investigation). The prosecutor and the judge did not accept my offer. I do not understand that decision. For me it was not smart to refuse that offer.

Finally, I must mention one tiny detail. The medical provider made the report of the attack and gave it to the police before the supposed email was received. Of course, nobody questioned that, nobody paid attention, nobody noticed that, basically they just did not care.

They were looking for a hacker to show how good they were to capture a cybercriminal, to be in the frontpage of every newspaper in Uruguay, and they got a hacker and they sent him to prison. It was a trophy for me. I was a trophy for them.
