Apartheid

Apartheid (an Afrikaans word translated as “apartness”) referred to a system of racial segregation established in 1948 by South Africa’s white political leaders. Like the Jim Crow laws of the southern United States, apartheid was used to intimidate and control the non-white population. Native black South Africans, so-called “coloureds” (people of mixed race), and Indian immigrants were segregated from white South Africans in neighborhoods, transportation, schools, and other public places. Apartheid also imposed curfews and travel restrictions.
