Back inside, they continued talking before transitioning to their original reason for meeting. Savannah removed a couple of kitchen backsplash samples from her satchel and lined them up along the counter. “I was thinking about going with glass tiles for the backsplash, maybe in a subtle blue or deep Sahara color to tie in the colors of the beach. That in conjunction with the white cabinets we talked about would look very nice. What do you think?”

He nodded. “It meets my approval. It also falls in line with some of the modern flips I’ve seen in the area.”

“Perfect. Now, just like in our other flips, I want to be careful to incorporate the true feeling of living in a Bahamian beach house. If we go too crazy with all the modern touches, I’m afraid we’ll lose that tropical oasis vibe we’re going for.”

“Agreed.”

In the background Parker heard the sound of a car door slamming shut. With the twist of a few keys, Meg entered.

Savannah mouthed the words I told you she’d be back. But it was all he could do to get himself together, straightening out his jeans and white t-shirt, making himself look as presentable as possible.

“Meg, is that you?” He called out.

“Hey, Parker, don’t mind me. Just stopped by to grab a few things.”

He raised his hands and folded his eyebrows at Savannah, in confusion.

To which Savannah replied by whispering, “go talk to her.”

This was ridiculous in his opinion. A grown man breaking out into a sweat, having to take coaching lessons from his sister about how to approach his crush. At forty years old, one would think he’d have it together by now.

“Uh, if you have a minute, I’d like to introduce you to my sister, Savannah. We’re back here in the kitchen.”

Meg popped her head in, subtly waving. “Hi, I’m Meg. It’s nice to meet you.”

Parker listened as his sister gave her a warm welcome in return. “It’s nice to meet you. I’ve heard so much about you,” she said.

Ugh, really Savannah? he thought, but allowed her to carry on. He noticed Meg’s sundress and semi-wet curls, which made him curious about where she’d been. He also noticed her t-strap sandals, red toenail polish, and for the first time ever, a tan line on her ring finger, marking the place where her engagement ring once rested.

Meg clutched the strap to her purse. “It was nice meeting you, but I certainly don’t want to get in your way. I’m sure you two have a lot of planning to do."

Savannah checked her cell phone. “Your timing couldn’t be more perfect. We’re pretty much done talking about the backsplash and tile for now. Our next meeting will be at the warehouse where we have to pick out kitchen cabinet samples, isn’t that right, Parker?” she winked.

He caught on quickly, recognizing that as her potential exit strategy.

“Yes, the warehouse should be our next stop, for sure. How about you text me later on this week and let me know what day works for you? Maybe by then we’ll have a couple of ideas in mind for the flooring as well.
