CHAPTER 15

LEAVING CITY BEHIND

It was 0–0, with thirty minutes gone. As the ball came to Kieran on the edge of the Brighton penalty area, he took a quick touch to control it and then BANG! His shot flew through a crowd of defenders, past the goalkeeper, and into the top corner.

Gooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal

lllllllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kieran was having so much fun at Burnley that he almost forgot about Manchester City. He still checked their results every weekend, and messaged Jim and Steve, but he no longer felt part of his childhood club. He was a Claret now.

So, Kieran was delighted when Eddie Howe told him that he wanted to sign him permanently.

‘I know your loan deal lasts until the end of the season but we want to buy you now,’ the Burnley manager explained. ‘You’re a huge part of this team and you’re getting better and better. We really don’t want to lose you in the summer!’

Kieran was desperate to keep playing week in week out. Howe was right about him; he was improving all the time. Burnley were a big club. They had been in the Premier League before, and they were trying to get back there as quickly as possible.

That fitted perfectly with Kieran’s plans. He was determined to work his way back up to the top, but would City let him leave? Yes, they would. After thirteen years at the club, Kieran was finally saying goodbye for good.

‘Are you sure this is what you want?’ Jim asked him before he signed his contract.

Kieran shrugged, ‘City are never going to give me a chance. I’m twenty-one now – it’s time for me to move on with my career.’

‘I know, I know, but they’re making a massive mistake with you! Good luck, kid. Go and become a superstar and prove them wrong.’

A week later, Ben also signed for Burnley. Together, both friends were leaving City behind.

‘No regrets,’ they agreed.

Their new club certainly had no regrets. For £400,000, Kieran was an absolute bargain for Burnley. He scored a screamer against Middlesbrough from forty yards out, and then set up two goals for Jay against Nottingham Forest.

‘I’m so glad you’re staying!’ the striker cried out as they celebrated.

However, Kieran’s dream of playing in the Premier League would have to wait another year. Burnley finished the 2011–12 season only thirteenth in the Championship. It had been a disappointing season for the team, but not for their right-back – after starring in all forty-six league matches, Kieran won the Burnley Player of the Year award.

‘And I’m only just getting started!’ he told his teammates happily.

Kieran couldn’t wait for the 2012–13 season to begin. For the first time in years, he felt settled. Burnley was a great club and he believed they were good enough to get back into the Premier League. Yes, Jay had now just signed for Southampton, but they had been joined by Danny Ings, who was up front with Charlie. One day soon, Kieran would return to the Etihad to play against Manchester City.

That idea really spurred Kieran on.
