“What the hell happened—” Dad wheezes as he stares at me, his eyes yellow with jaundice “—To you?”

I’m sure I look rough. My face is bruised, my eye is swollen, and my lip is busted. Let’s not count the wounds on my arms and knuckles, then the bruise around my throat. It’s only been a day so right now everything is pretty fresh. I hand Dad a glass of water with straw in it and place the straw between his lips. He sucks down half the glass quickly and I set it on the nightstand.

“Don’t worry about me. I’m fine,” I say, taking the seat in the rocking chair in the corner. The wood creaks from old age with every back and forth motion.

“You aren’t fine. You got the shit beat out of you.”

“Yeah? Well, I killed the other guy. So like I said, you don’t need to worry about me.”

“Damn it, Eden. Why can’t you just accept the fact−−?’

“—Stop. Just stop,” I beg as I rub my temples when a headache comes on quickly. “Can we not talk about this? I don’t feel like fighting. I’m tired, Dad. Just…can’t we be normal for a day?”

“Normal?”

“Yeah, normal. Let’s watch TV or something. I don’t want to talk.”

“That’s too bad. I need you to call for Church in fifteen minutes.”

“Me?” I hold my hand to my jaw when it protests.

“I told you, I need you to be my voice. I don’t want Torque to take over just yet.”

“He is the VP. How do you think he’s going to feel if he can’t announce church?”

“I don’t care. I want to be dead before he takes over.”

I scoff. “Right. And you’d rather be dead before I take over. But you want me to call the shots? It’s hypocritical.”

“Don’t mouth off to me. I’m still your father and I’m still the President. You do as I say.”

I stand and stare down at Dad’s cut lying across the bench at the bottom of the bed. I want one so bad, but because I’m a woman, I don’t get one. My brother’s do. So when I’m here, I just seem like I’m a hang−around instead of a member.

I’ll have a cut one day.

Mark my fucking words.

“Where are you going?” he coughs out the question as he peels off his oxygen mask.

“I’m going to go call Church. I don’t need a lecture on how to do it. I know how.” I walk out the door, slamming a bit harder than I intend to.

I head down the hall, my boots leaving impressions on the dusty wooden floors. God, this place is a mess. The pictures on the wall hang crooked from the lack of care, but until I’m officially a Ruthless King, I’m not going to give a damn about what needs to be fixed.

Knowing if I call for Church, no one will listen to me, so I head out to find my brothers. They are in the kitchen, sitting at the table and drinking a cup of coffee.
