Waiting for Gavino

It pays to have a friend at the unemployment office, Trinity thought.

Posters covered the sterile, welfare-green walls.

Trinity passed the time waiting for Gavino Ybarra to come out of his office by trying to decipher the various languages of the posters.

Ybarra shook Trinity’s had vehemently. Easily carrying three hundred pounds under his pink guayabera shirt, Gavino had probably doubled his weight since basic training in Fort Leonard Wood.

“Hey Frank,” he said. “This is great!” He slapped Trinity on the back. “How come you don’t come around anymore? You need to come around, have a couple of beers, listen to some music. you know, just like the old times.”

Ybarra’s face was round and expectant.

“Thanks, Gavino. I’ve been busy. You wouldn’t believe it.”

“Believe it?” Ybarra looked around the office. “I’m up to my ears here, myself... Hey Frank, so how long you been out?”

“Not long,” Trinity said.

“Seems like yesterday, doesn’t it?”

Trinity thought about it. It didn’t seem like over twenty years since he first met Gavino. Both of them were heading to basic training together. Trinity from the university, Gavino straight out of the barrio.

Gavino had insisted Trinity meet his Tucson family after basic and maintained that they were adopting him as one of their own.

His face showed concern. “What’s going on, Frank? What can I do for you?”

“You’re a good guy, Gavino, aren’t you? I didn’t even have to ask.”

“Hey Frank, you know me. Anything to help. What do you need?”

“What I need is a last known address. A phone number, whatever you got.”

Ybarra’s face turned serious. “Who are you looking for?”

“It’s a guy named Jerome Parroti. Last address unknown. Worked for a while at A-1 Exterminating. He was referred by a temp agency, prior to that he was seen by you folks. Maybe he was getting a check, maybe not. Supposedly the guy spent a lot of time on the street... Maybe a lot of time in the joint, too.”

“Sounds like my kind of people,” Ybarra said. “Come on back and lets take a look at the fiche. I don’t suppose you got a social?”

“Are you kidding me?”

“Just thought I’d ask.”

“Actually, I do have one.” Trinity had copied the number from the application. “Does that make it easier?”

Ybarra laughed. “Are you kidding me?”

“Just thought I’d ask.”

“Frank, you know you got to have a social just to take a leak these days.”

“So it’s come to that.”

“Hey, it’s the truth... What can I tell you.” Ybarra put on a heavy pair of horn rimmed glasses to look at the computer. His desk was government-issue gray with photographs of his family under the glass top.

Trinity glanced at the photos. “Everyone’s gotten bigger since I saw them last.”

“Yeah Frank.” Ybarra paused in his search through a tray of microfiche. “That’s the way the world works.” He pulled a thin piece of plastic from the tray. “Like I say, Frank, you shouldn’t make yourself such a stranger. Angie was just asking about you the other day. Her sister’s still single, you know.”

“The guy goes by the name of Parrot, if that helps any.
