When your dog wants you to play—or tries to entice the family cat into a friendly game of chase—he will automatically raise his back end, lower his chest, and extend his front paws. In the dog world, this is known as the play bow. You can teach your dog to Take a Bow when you catch him in this gesture by saying, “take a bow” and then praising him and giving him a treat when he holds the bow for a few seconds. Once he associates this gesture with a food payoff, you’ll be able to say, “take a bow” whenever he is simply standing or sitting. If you have difficulty teaching this trick, try pushing a treat between the front legs of your standing dog as you say, “take a bow.” His front legs should go flat on the ground and his back end will rise in his quest to eat the treat.
