When Trevor arrived at Libby’s house, he found her drawing circles and lines on a poster.

“Maybe this time if I present all the students’ ideas in a pro/con chart or a bar graph or a pie chart, he’ll see that it’s a good idea. Something visual—it makes for good television. That’s what he wants! And then we’ll do a separate one for Savannah’s idea, maybe even use puffy paint.”

“You’re going through a lot of effort just to impress Savannah.”

“She’s never spoken to me before, but now she’s acting like I’m this cool, important person. She even waved at me when we were standing in the bus line. At least I think it was me—Corey Long was standing right behind me.”

Trevor felt a tingle. He’d heard these words before. She went through this the summer that she was friends with Jessica Lymon. Libby was so wrapped up in what Jessica thought of her that she was crushed when Jessica didn’t want to be friends anymore. And Trevor worried the same thing was happening now.

“Aren’t you sensing a pattern here?”

“Pattern?”

“You know…Jessica Lymon…now Savannah Maxwell.”

Libby looked up at the ceiling and paused as if she were considering this connection. Then: “Nope. Two totally different things.”

Trevor sighed. He guessed being the best friend meant you couldn’t always stop your friend from getting hurt. But you could try to find a magic washcloth to heal her when she did. Or something close to it. For Libby, it was ranch dressing.

“Here you go.” He pulled out a packet from his bag and handed it over.

She gave an embarrassed grin. “Thanks.” She dipped some carrots and munched happily. “I know! For our bar graph, let’s glue on some ribbon accents—for flair!”

Trevor nodded and held the ribbon in place while she glued it on. “We should show it to him first thing at lunch break. That way we won’t miss him,” he said.

“And we’ll make sure the cameras are rolling.”

“Just make sure nothing’s in my teeth this time.”

“Don’t worry, Trev. I’ve got your back.”

He felt warmth in his cheeks. His best friend telling him she’d be there for him made him want to do the same for her.

I can do this, he thought. I’m going to be open to change…ridiculously plush lounge seating and all.
