Chapter 16
Aisling woke from a horrible dream. She was running away from something, but it was gaining on her. She was afraid, it was darkâ¦
The shaft of sunlight that came through the gap in the curtains fell across the bed. She was alone. She went to sit up, and everything hurt. Her mouth felt dry and she tasted something metallic.
What had happened? Then it came back, in pieces at first. She was at the pictures with Kate and Mark⦠No, Mark wasnât there, it was just Kate. She⦠Oh God, she remembered. She had needed to use the toilet, she had crossed to the hall, Sean⦠Wave after icy wave of recollection. She felt sick and vomited.
The sound must have alerted someone downstairs, as she heard feet on the landing.
âAis, Ais, pet, I didnât realise you were awake. I was having a cleanupâ¦â Mark appeared. He looked pale and shaken, and she noticed as he went to help her out of bed to the bathroom that there were cuts on his hands.
She was crying, the bed covered in the contents of her stomach. As she allowed him to help her out of bed, she felt something between her legs â a sanitary napkin. What was that doing there? She had a hazy memory of Dr Grahame. He had given her something, an injection⦠She wished she could think straight.
Mark helped her to the side of the bed and took off her nightdress, his hands trembling. He was as upset as she was. How much did he know? Aisling found it hard to think. He got a clean garment from the drawer and gently put it over her head, then sat her on the chair as he stripped the sheets and blankets.
âThe baby,â was all she managed, her hands on her abdomen as if by the gesture she could hold her child inside of her.
Mark turned to her, his face ashen. He dropped the sheets and came around to kneel before her. âDr Grahame said there was a little bleeding, but we are hoping it settles down. Some women do get that in early pregnancy and go on to be fine, so Iâm sure thatâs whatâs going to happen, sweetheart. You just need to rest, and I really think everything is going to be all right.â
âWhat happened?â she asked as she lifted one of his hands. The knuckles were skinned.
âNothing⦠Donât worry, Ais, nothingâ¦â Mark was distraught.
âMark, please, tell meâ¦â she insisted. After all they had been through, she would never let him distance himself from her again, no matter how bad things were. âDid you find Sean?â
His face told her all she needed to know. âTell me.â Her voice was lead.
âI swear, Ais, I justâ¦â He stood and ran his hands through his tousled blonde hair. âWhen I saw what he did to you, Iâ¦I know I shouldnât have, but I just⦠I saw red.â
âWhat did you do?â she asked, dreading his answer.
âI went down there, and there he was in his kitchen with his cashbox, counting his money as if nothing, so I beat him up.
