Chapter 27

Mostassen, Lasgol, Egil, Astrid and the other Panthers were watching the bay from the cliff. The Royal Ranger had sent Egil and Lasgol to fetch the rest of the team; he wanted them all with him.

More than a thousand dark dots filled the bay. They were rowing-boats approaching in silence, slowly, seeking the coast under cover of the night.

“We need to get closer to get a better idea of how many of the enemy there are and what they’re planning to do,” Mostassen said.

“Shall I warn Ulsen?” Astrid asked.

“Not yet. It’s too soon to decide. We need to make sure they’re really going to land and that this really is an invasion.”

“Well, it certainly looks that way to me,” Viggo commented.

“I’m not saying it isn’t, it’s just that we have to be sure. They might turn back at any moment. It might be a distracting maneuver. We don’t know, and we must be sure. And they mustn’t see us.”

“Sir,” Egil put in, “if they’re moving on to the beach it must be because they think it’s clear. There must be a patrol on land.”

“That’s a correct assumption. That’s the trail I found. I couldn’t locate the patrol. They have someone very skilled with them who’s hiding their tracks very well, practically making them vanish, which worries me.”

“A renegade Ranger?” Nilsa suggested.

“No. I believe the tracks have been wiped out using arcane arts.”

“Oh, no! Magic!” Gerd cried in terror.

“That’s what I’m afraid of.”

“What are we going to do, sir?” Egil asked.

“We’re going to approach very carefully, so as not to be detected, then wait and watch what they do until we’re sure the invasion has begun. Get ready to move.”

They started down the cliff toward the southwestern end of the bay, with the Royal Ranger in the lead.

The first barges had landed in the darkness. Not a single light or fire was visible, which was significant: they were trying to land without being seen, with all the risk that involved.

They found shelter behind a group of rocks which gave them a view of the beach at their feet and the bay on their right. Mostassen ordered them to take up their positions, then they waited.

Lasgol noticed that there were a dozen or so people waiting for the landing. From where they were hiding they could not see their faces, but their clothes identified them as Norghanians rather than people from the Frozen Continent. But the ones who were coming to the beach were not Norghanians at all. They were huge figures with bluish skin and hair of ice: Wild of the Ice.

“I can’t see them very well in this dim light,” Viggo said, “but judging by their size and what they’re wearing they’re Wild Ones of the Ice.”

“And the ones waiting are Norghanians,” Ingrid pointed out.

“If they’re Norghanians,” said Viggo, “they must be from the Western League.”

“Isn’t it strange that they’re here deep in the east?” Nilsa wondered aloud.

Viggo smiled. “I’m no strategist, but if the hosts of the Frozen
