“Jorge!” the man called. “Sube por favór!”

He pointed to the tree. One of the boys Max’s age had a machete in his belt — just like his father’s, but smaller. He jumped down from his horse and scrambled up the tree using his hands and feet. He hacked off a bunch of ripe bananas, shinnied back down the trunk and handed them to me. Then he climbed back on his horse.

Just before the family rode off, the man tipped his hat to us, and we thanked him for the present as the kids waved.

I wondered what it would be like to travel that way, instead of taking the bus or the subway or the car. To go to school, I’d just hop on my horse and gallop across the dusty red fields. And pick some fresh bananas on the way.
