Chapter 16

Shakti leaned on April’s desk. “I visited a college here in Harrogate, I heard of it by pure chance, from my hairdresser. They teach media makeup.”

April glanced at her colleague and smiled before looking back at her computer screen.

“That covers the teaching of all aspects of film, television and theatre makeup. Extending that thought, April, it covers horror, hospital and police programmes where you’ll see physical injuries that have to look real and very effective under scrutiny.” She turned her phone round and showed April some images of the end results of the students’ work within the course. “They’re so realistic. The zombie was bloody frightening I bet.”

“I didn’t know this college existed.” April flicked the screen looking at each image in turn.

“As I said, I heard about it purely by chance. It doesn’t sound like they do any of that stuff from looking at their website as it suggests it’s all about health and beauty.”

April looked back at the photographs. “To me these seem unhealthy and so bloody ugly!” She laughed. “But clever.”

“They have a few linked colleges around the country and the media makeup side is well subscribed. About thirty students within each college study how to make someone look as if they’ve been hit by a bus. Obviously, with so many new dramas on stream there’s a need for creative staff. The latest trend according to a student I spoke to is drag queen makeup!”

April handed the phone back.

“I also spoke with one of the lecturers who was utterly fascinating.” Shakti propped her backside on the desk. “In a TV series you can’t give the leading detective a black eye and in the next episode have it disappear, no, not at all, the bruising has got to age as in life so the makeup artist has to imitate that change over a realistic time period and it has to look authentic.” She paused waiting for a response.

“Fascinating, Shak. And your point is?” A frustration crept into April’s voice.

Shakti leaned down and slipped her hand into the bag that rested at her feet and brought out a carrier bag. She tossed it onto the desk deftly avoiding the keypad and mouse. It bounced slightly before landing on April’s lap. “You might want to look in there.”

April opened the top of the bag and slipped in her hand. “Bloody hell!” She withdrew her hand quickly as she looked at Shakti, her face clearly showing uncertainty and a degree of disgust. “What is it?”

Shakti took the bag and removed the silicone life sized male hand. “Made by the tutor as a film prop. Reminds me of the objects found at three of our locations. I’ve borrowed it. This is even more life-like as it’s coloured to give a more realistic appearance of a severed hand. However, there’s an important question we need to consider. Ask me how much it would cost to make.” She offered it back to April who reluctantly took it whilst at the same time pulling a face.
