In the same way that food forms us physically, God’s Word can form us into complete human beings.

Because of these Old Testament examples, Israel eventually made Scripture reading a mainstay in its worship services. By the first century it was customary for pious Jews to meet at local synagogues on the Sabbath, read passages from their Hebrew Scriptures, and have someone briefly comment on them. Luke describes a time when Jesus entered the synagogue in his hometown of Nazareth, as he typically did every Sabbath, but on this occasion Jesus stood up, read from the prophet Isaiah, and explained to everyone that the words they just heard were being fulfilled right before their very eyes in him (Luke 4:15-22).
