ACTIVITY OVERVIEW

Data visualization serves many purposes. Often, looking at raw data doesn’t tell people a lot, and it doesn’t usually give programmers the answers they need. Sometimes it’s helpful to view the information in a different way. Graphs and Venn diagrams are examples. In this activity, you’ll visualize different outdoor activities!

INSTRUCTIONS

To begin, think of two outdoor activities. Examples can be running, hiking, playing baseball, or riding your bike. For your two activities, write a list of things that describe each activity. After you have your lists, draw a two-circle Venn diagram on your paper. A Venn diagram is an important chart. It has two circles that overlap each other. At the top of one circle of the diagram, write your first activity. Then at the top of the other circle, write the second activity. Once you have the diagram drawn, write characteristics that are unique to one activity in that activity’s circle. In the space the circles share, write characteristics the two activities share. After you’re finished, what have you learned by visualizing your data?
