Gaming consoles, like Microsoft’s Xbox, Sony’s PlayStation 3, and Nintendo’s Wii, are now more than just game playing. More and more they are used to stream video content from online sources.

Gaming consoles like the Xbox, which can play games as well as connect to the Internet, now also stream video.

Every year, the E3 conference brings together gamers and the latest games and gaming tech. In 2012, companies that made consoles were targeting not just excited gamers, but television viewers as well. They were actively pitching new apps that can turn gaming consoles into a multimedia platform. In a study by the Leichtman Research Group, Microsoft reported that those who own an Xbox 360 spend more time online watching videos and listening to music than playing games. Just four years ago, playing video games was the only thing you could do with a game console. According to a June 5, 2012, article in the Los Angeles Times, more than forty million people use the Xbox Live online service. More than fifty-one million PlayStation 3 consoles are connected to Sony’s free Internet service. Now people can also connect to Hulu, Netflix, HBO Go, and other online service providers to access streaming content that they can play on their television sets.

Ross Honey, general manager of Xbox Live entertainment and advertising, told the Los Angeles Times that “entertainment has always been part of our strategy, but it was in the background. Now we have the content and user experience to legitimately tell a consumer, ‘This is the platform for all of your entertainment.’”
