Given the limitations, the P. family has lived a remarkably adventurous and travel-filled life, punctuated by a few near misses, like the anaphylaxis that Maria suffered while visiting her son at singing camp, and another during a cruise when the chef neglected to connect her careful instructions with his recipe for chocolate mousse. Fortunately for her, the ship’s doctor had recently lost a close friend to anaphylaxis and was hyper-aware of the treatment protocols.

The long-term toll on Maria’s health was considerable. She had diminished lung function. She had extreme weight gain during prolonged treatment with prednisone and antibiotics with mood swings to match. (Systemic steroid use causes patients to retain water, eat more, and move less because of discomfort from chronic inflammation. It also tends to redistribute fat, which accounts for the characteristic “moon face.”) Her doctor told her that if she could see her lungs, they would be strawberry red from inflammation. She and her husband were continually on the lookout for new treatments, and that led them to Mount Sinai where there was an early clinical trial of one of Dr. Li’s ASHMI. While she was turned down for falling outside the subject profile, Dr. Li told her that she could treat her as a private patient.

The early treatment involved 90 pills a day, including food allergy treatments, immune boosters, and metabolism boosters.

Maria writes,

After visiting Dr. Li and starting my Chinese teas, gradually I began to feel better. The first six months there was a slight improvement, although I was on high doses of the teas. As the first year came around I started getting off my oral steroids and stayed on Advair. I got off all asthma medications a year into my program, although I still carry my rescue inhaler and I have a full supply of antibiotics in case I get sick during my travels.
