Caleb patrolled the perimeter of the rear yard as if he was stalking an armed killer. Which I might be, he told himself. He had no doubt that Vivienne had spotted an interloper and under other circumstances he would have chalked it up to curious kids or nosy neighbors. However, given their current dilemma and the fact they knew so little about the threats to her life, he had to assume the worst.

“I hope she does the same,” he muttered as he returned to the house. She was waiting in the kitchen with Hank at her side. To Caleb’s delight both she and the dog seemed glad to see him.

“All clear,” he said, eyeing her filled holster. “I’m glad you’ve decided to stay armed. Can’t be too careful.”

“Or too paranoid,” she said wryly. “I’m beginning to feel for the partners of the attack and protection K-9s. This is a bit more action than I’m used to.”

Caleb opened the door for her, then followed into the yard. “There’s usually a lot of paperwork and desk time to my job, too,” he said. “With less adrenaline.”

That brought a slight smile and she nodded.

“Since the safe house has been compromised—and we have to assume the prowler wasn’t random—I’m calling my boss to get us moved.” At her nod, he made the call, dismayed to hear there were no other safe houses available tonight. At least a patrol car would be monitoring until morning. It wasn’t enough, but he’d take what he could get.

Once they saw a patrol car parking out front Caleb relaxed...just a bit.

“Getting back to what we were talking about,” Vivienne said, “boredom can have its upside. Why don’t you have a seat on the steps while I exercise Hank. You can keep an eye on us from there and he won’t be so distracted.”

“You’re sure?”

“Positive,” she replied. “We all need to dial down the angst or we’ll be too exhausted to be at our best.”

Caleb nodded, then smiled at her. “There are moments when you actually make sense,” he teased.

Vivienne’s responding silly face showed that she got the joke. So did saying, “Stick around and I’ll show you just how smart I can be, FBI.”
