Caleb patrolled the perimeter of the rear yard as if he was stalking an armed killer. Which I might be, he told himself. He had no doubt that Vivienne had spotted an interloper and under other circumstances he would have chalked it up to curious kids or nosy neighbors. However, given their current dilemma and the fact they knew so little about the threats to her life, he had to assume the worst.
âI hope she does the same,â he muttered as he returned to the house. She was waiting in the kitchen with Hank at her side. To Calebâs delight both she and the dog seemed glad to see him.
âAll clear,â he said, eyeing her filled holster. âIâm glad youâve decided to stay armed. Canât be too careful.â
âOr too paranoid,â she said wryly. âIâm beginning to feel for the partners of the attack and protection K-9s. This is a bit more action than Iâm used to.â
Caleb opened the door for her, then followed into the yard. âThereâs usually a lot of paperwork and desk time to my job, too,â he said. âWith less adrenaline.â
That brought a slight smile and she nodded.
âSince the safe house has been compromisedâand we have to assume the prowler wasnât randomâIâm calling my boss to get us moved.â At her nod, he made the call, dismayed to hear there were no other safe houses available tonight. At least a patrol car would be monitoring until morning. It wasnât enough, but heâd take what he could get.
Once they saw a patrol car parking out front Caleb relaxed...just a bit.
âGetting back to what we were talking about,â Vivienne said, âboredom can have its upside. Why donât you have a seat on the steps while I exercise Hank. You can keep an eye on us from there and he wonât be so distracted.â
âYouâre sure?â
âPositive,â she replied. âWe all need to dial down the angst or weâll be too exhausted to be at our best.â
Caleb nodded, then smiled at her. âThere are moments when you actually make sense,â he teased.
Vivienneâs responding silly face showed that she got the joke. So did saying, âStick around and Iâll show you just how smart I can be, FBI.â
