CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
When Jack pulled back up to the lake, it was already a little after eight, and the sky was already getting darker. Jack grabbed his flashlight and got out of his car before heading toward the forest section of the lake. As he got closer, he saw the light reflect off of the yellow police tape.
Jack ducked underneath yellow line and walked partially through the forest. He knew the detectives had already swept the area, so they decided to walk down to another area where a different stream led into the lake.
When he stepped on gravel, he lifted his flashlight and began scanning the perimeter. If there was a source other than the water, it would have to be out of plan sight. Somewhere the eyes of the locals and the police officials wouldnât notice since they were focused so hard on the ditch where the body had been found.
âBut what could that possibly be?â Jack wondered out loud. He didnât have a lead to go off of, and while he was waiting for Kira to conduct her research with the DNA, Jack was a sitting duck.
He walked over to a small stream just north of where he had last seen something unusual. He shined the light down the bank to look around. The image of Davidâs pale face immediately appeared in Jackâs thoughts.
He winced and closed his eyes, hoping to erase the grotesque thoughts from his mind. He didnât want to remember David in that way. You didnât deserve to die that way. Jack had an inkling that whatever had killed David might still be out there.
âWhat is thatâ¦?â Jackâs words trailed off as the light from his flashlight caught the reflection of something clinging to a low hanging limb just over the stream. He stepped closer and brought his face closer to the unidentified substance.
As he got closer, he saw that it was a silver gooey substance. It was almost the same color as what was found on the dead fish. Jack furrowed his brows and dug into his pocket for his gloves. He put them on and angled the flashlight closer to the mysterious goo. Reaching out, he touched it with his gloved hand.
What the heck is this?
The substance felt squishy to the touch and surprisingly warm. When he pulled his hand away, it still stuck to his gloved hand. He shined the light over the sticky silver goop.
Other than what he had seen with the dead fish, Jack hadnât seen the silver ooze before. This felt almost like Jell-O, if not thicker.
Jack lifted his head up when he saw two headlights in the distance. After a few seconds, he heard the car door shut and saw a flashlight shining through the trees. It wasnât long before Ethan made his appearance.
âLate night fly fishing, Jack? Wish you would have told me to bring my fishing pole,â Ethan joked as he approached.
âDid you get those samples to Kira?â
Ethan nodded. âYup, I just left from there. She was
