Chapter Nine
There was only one reason why I was in this car. It was because my best friend had taken to calling me names.
âVannie, you look like a vampire!â
Thatâs what she said to me right after weâd had that laugh about talking dirty to Sheldon and she finally told me that sheâd only asked him to get well soon.
âA vampire? Really? Geeâ¦thanks.â
âIâm just keeping it one-hundred, Chica. So, you ready to break out of here and go home?â
âNo, Iâm good. I donât want to leave.â
âWait! What?â She looked like I was the one now speaking Spanish. âDidnât you just call me and ask me to come here so that you could go home?â
Iâd already forgotten about that call. Mostly, Iâd called Theresa as a kind of passive-aggressive move to handle Ginger. âYeah, but Iâm good now.â
âNo. Youâre not,â Theresa said, folding her arms.
âI agree with Aunt Resa,â Kym said. âIt really helped me when I went home last night. And you sent us home so that we could do this in shifts, right? So itâs your turn to rest.â
âBut really, Iâm good.â
Kym and Theresa exchanged a glance and then the two of them pressed their lips together and folded their arms. It looked like Kym had a new twin.
âWhat?â I asked.
âYou. Look,â Theresa started.
âA. Hot. Mess,â Kym finished as if the two had rehearsed that.
Then, Theresa just had to drive home the insults some more with, âYouâve got to go home because you cannot be telling people that youâre my girl, looking like a vampire.â
âWould you stop with the name-calling? I donât want to leave Sheldon alone. Suppose he wakes up? Plus, you know me. If I go home Iâm not going to rest anyway.â
âFine. Then, you can come right back. But at least you wonât be a smelly vampire anymore.â
âReally, Theresa,â I said, not feeling her jokes. Especially since I wasnât sure she was kidding since her lips didnât turn into any kind of a smile while she teased me.
âAnd I donât get what you mean about you donât want to leave Daddy alone,â Kym said, jumping in. âWhatâs wrong with me?â
Now, she was upset?
My daughter said, âDaddy wonât be alone if Iâm here, Mother. Iâll stay until you get back.â She turned to Theresa and told her, âYou go with her,â as if she were in charge. âAt least you can make her lay down for a little while since you said she looks like a zombie.â
Theresa raised her eyebrows. âI didnât say zombie, I said vampire. If you are going to be my doctor, you are going to have to pay attention to details.â
âWell okay, but if you are going to say she looks like something, then you need to know the difference between a vampire and a zombie. She looks like a zombie.â
Then, they both stared at me with straight faces.
âReally?â I said, kind of pissed.
A couple of seconds ticked by and then the both of them burst out laughing. Clearly, I didnât find any of this funny.
