“I’ll tell you right now, I’m one of those men who have to be in control of the remote,” Del warns as he turns on the television. He flips through the channels until he finds a rerun of The Big Bang Theory.

“You’re one of those men.” My words seem to come from someplace far off as I fight to focus on Del. “You’re lucky you’re cute or I wouldn’t have you in my house.”

“You think I’m cute,” Del says with satisfaction.

“Maybe.” I allow, taking a bite of bread. His smile widens.

“How cute am I?” Del wonders, watching me with an amused look, a piece of pasta dangling off his fork. He’s not wearing his glasses tonight and his green eyes seem to twinkle.

“Do you really want to go there?” I take a bite of the pasta and close my eyes with appreciation of the taste. “It doesn’t matter what you look like if you can cook like this.”

“C’mon,” Del persists with an appealing smile. “I’m alone with a beautiful woman who thinks I’m cute. I need to know just how cute you’re thinking. Denzel Washington cute?”

He called me beautiful. Del thinks I’m beautiful.

I hide my smile and concede to the game, Iliya finally fading from my thoughts. I would concede to whatever Del suggested right now. “Denzel is too intense. Your attractiveness is much more laid back.”

Del laughs delightedly. “Is it possible to be intensely attractive?”

“Why not?” I shift to face him, my back against the arm of the couch, refusing to allow an image of Iliya overwhelm me again.

It’s not Iliya’s time now. It’s Del’s.

“Look at someone like Angelina Jolie or Nicole Kidman,” I continue. “They’re so beautiful that it kind of overwhelms you. Compared to someone like Jennifer Aniston, who is attractive, but it isn’t in your face as much.”

“Interesting. You sound like you’ve given this some thought. I wonder if Jennifer Aniston would understand your logic, though,” Del muses.

“It’s not like I’m insulting her,” I protest.

“You’re comparing her to her ex-husband’s new wife. Pretty sure she’d take that as an insult somehow.”

I cock my head at him. “I get the impression you know the ins and outs of People magazine.”

“Please.” Del reaches for his wine. “Too many Kardashians in that. Entertainment Weekly is more my speed.”

My smile widens. “I’ve had my subscription for six years. It was the only written word that my ex would read.”

“You’re an author married to someone who didn’t like books?” Del asks with astonishment.

“They held no magic for him.” I shrug. The only thing Isaac and I had in common is that we were both from military families in New Brunswick. He loved to fly; I loved to write. He was social, I was not. Somehow we made it through four years together.

“You deserve someone a lot better than an ignorant, uninformed Neanderthal. I really dislike him, you know.”

“You’ve never met him,” I say, frantically blinking away the sudden wetness in my eyes. No one took my side in the divorce. My father said I was making a mistake; Kelsie scoffed that Isaac was the only one who wanted me.
