117 MAKE A POOL NOODLE JUGLINE

Nothing says summer like chasing down catfish jugs gone wild. Here’s a way to recycle foam pool noodles into killer jugs. Follow these instructions and you’ll be able to fit five of them upright in a 5-gallon bucket. (Be sure to check your local laws. Some areas require identification on juglines.)

STEP 1 Cut a 5-foot pool noodle into 1-foot sections. Wrap one end of each section with duct tape to protect the noodle from line cuts. Next, use a large darning needle or crochet hook to string a 4-foot length of stout 60- to 80- pound monofilament or trotline cord through the noodle above the tape. Tie one end to a washer or bead, and pull it snug against the noodle; then, tie a three-way swivel to the other end.

STEP 2 Attach 20- to 40-pound monofilament to the lower ring of the three-way swivel; use enough to reach the bottom. Anchor this with enough weight for the current. To the other ring, tie on a 4-foot dropper line of 20-pound fluorocarbon and a circle hook. Reduce line twist as you wrap line around the noodle for storage with a barrel swivel near the weight. If you’re fishing at night, wrap some reflective tape around the other end.

STEP 3 Bait the hooks with small live bluegills, wads of nightcrawlers, or cut bait.
