CHAPTER TWELVE

* * *

It was nearly ten-thirty when I left my house that evening for my drive back into the District.

I had dressed carefully for the occasion: a brightly checkered sports jacket with an open-necked shirt, and there was a tennis racket on the front seat of the car beside me. It’s interesting how disarming a tennis racket can be, even at night. If you see a person carrying a tennis racket you immediately relax. It’s not a very serviceable weapon of any type, and people who are walking along with a tennis racket seem to be quite respectable. You don’t see ghetto types frequenting the tennis courts near Gordon’s apartment.

I found a parking place directly in front of Gordon’s apartment house, and I picked up the racket and walked casually into the lobby. A doorman opened the door, looked critically at me, and then appeared to relax. There was an elevator waiting and I stepped in and pushed the button for the second floor.

On the second floor I found the fire stairs, and descended again to the first floor, making sure that the doorman at the other end of the corridor didn’t see me. I had Gordon’s apartment number, and I walked along the corridor until I found it. I stood there a minute, fumbling in my pocket for a cigarette, but while I was lighting it I was figuring out the floor plan of this first floor so I could find Gordon’s apartment from the outside.

When I was satisfied I had it calculated correctly I climbed back up the fire stairs to the second floor, and then took the elevator back down to the lobby. The doorman nodded to me as I left.

I drove off, circled the block, and approached the building from the rear. I parked beside a row of trees, slipped off my sports jacket and reached in the back seat for the other equipment I had brought with me: a dark windbreaker which I slipped on, and a roll of adhesive tape and the glass cutter from my tool chest. I walked slowly across the lawn, keeping close to the line of trees and watching the apartment building to see if anyone happened to be looking out a window.

When I neared Gordon’s apartment I made a quick dash across the lawn and flattened myself against the wall. I remained motionless for almost a full minute, waiting to see if there was any reaction to my presence. Gordon’s apartment was dark, of course, but there was a large French window on the patio, big enough for me to crawl through if I could get it open. I pulled on a pair of tight-fitting gloves, and with the glass cutter I drew a six-inch rectangle on the window, biting the metal edge sharply into the glass. Then I tore off two pieces of adhesive tape and affixed them to the top line of the rectangle. One shot with the handle of the glass cutter, and the panel broke open, held in place by the strips of adhesive tape.
