Chapter Thirteen
What I Have
Packages began to arrive from Canada every few months. I looked forward to hearing Maâs letters read out loud and I loved seeing photographs of my family. I was grateful that they were safe and that they all looked happy. But my life didnât change.
I didnât understand what Ma and Ba meant when they said that Bà Ngoại and I would be joining them. How could we do that? I imagined the two of us escaping in the middle of the night through the streets then onto a boat like Ba had done with Linh and Ma had done with Tuan, Lan, and Loan. How could that happen? Bà Ngoạiâs legs were too old to run, and my lungs were too weak.
A bit later in her letters, Ma wrote that we would be in an airplane. I had seen them up in the sky sometimes on my way to school. But how would we get inside one? She never explained that part.
Whenever I was sad or felt sorry for myself after this, I thought about what it was like for Bà Ngoại when she was my age. My life was so much better than hers had been. Trang was my friend, I had enough food to eat, and I had a grandmother who loved me.
And getting letters, photographs, and clothes from my family was better than having no family at all.
