I blinked and the four of us were standing in the living room of Tanner’s apartment. I took a step forward and Tanner grabbed my arm so I wouldn’t stumble. That was very jarring.

“Ooooh,” said Chastity. “You’d prefer Ash to start sleeping her way through New York City instead of Morocco? Is it because the Berbers will stretch her out too much?”

“Please just give me a second to think,” said Tanner and ran his hand down his face.

I stared at him. I had a million questions running through my head. I didn’t want any city to stretch me out. I just wanted him. And I knew that’s what he wanted too. Or else he wouldn’t look so devastated right now.

“I think we should go to the Society and keeping on matching people,” said Nigel.

“What?” I shook my head. “Why? Didn’t you hear what the genie council just said?”

“Yes, Mistress Ash. But I think it’s very important to finish what you start. And we have so many people we are currently working on finding matches for. Like Frankie. We can’t leave Frankie without a proper suitor for coitus. How would that make us look?”

Who the hell cares? “How about you just bang Frankie then?”

“Moi? But I’m a pure boy.”

Ew. I hate that I had to just hear that. And what the heck did that even mean? Just...ew.

“Would everyone please stop talking?” said Tanner. He rubbed his temples as he tried to think of a way out of this mess.

But there was no way out of the mess I’d made. He had to match me. To someone other than him.

“I think we should probably give them a minute alone,” said Chastity, finally reading the room.

“I don’t want to go anywhere with you,” said Nigel.

“You don’t have to come with me. You just need to leave this room.”

Nigel huffed and walked past her.

Chastity rolled her eyes and followed him.

Tanner sighed and sat down on the couch.

“What do the new rules mean exactly?” I asked and sat down next to him. “Is there some kind of genie loophole?” Maybe? Hopefully?

He shook his head. “In order for me to be free, you have to have sex with your true love.”

“But…you’re my true love.”

Tanner exhaled slowly. “I agree.”

Wait. “So you’re saying I don’t have to whore around town?”

“I do think we’re a perfect match, Ash. But you’ll die if you touch my flaming genie penis. So you can’t have sex with me to break my curse. It has to be with someone with a normal mortal penis. We have to hope that you have another true love out there.”

“Another? Is that even possible?”

He nodded. “Your life can go in so many directions. There are so many possibilities of happiness if you open your heart to it. You just have to dive in and trust your gut.”

“So that’s what you want? You want to break up with me and for me to find true love with someone else?” I tried my best to blink away my impending tears.
