Morgan stood out of the way and watched as the crime scene investigators crawled over the area, taking samples and marking locations. The light was fading fast, and a sense of urgency buzzed through the atmosphere.

Another set of techs were working on Brianna Olson’s car where it sat on the other side of the road, headlights still on, driver’s side door open, keys still in the ignition.

Whatever the reason she’d had for getting out of her car, she hadn’t intended on being gone long.

The car had been what prompted the older gentleman who had called in the situation to stop in the first place. He’d seen the car pulled over on the side of the road and had slowed to see if someone was in trouble and needed help. He’d probably expected to help someone change a tire or call for help. Instead, he’d seen Brianna’s body on the opposite side of the road and had realized that she needed much more than he could offer.

Brianna’s body was now mercifully covered with a sheet, but Morgan had seen her up close before they’d covered her. He recognized her. He’d seen her around the hospital and he thought she might have been the nurse on one or more of his cases. He probably wouldn’t have been able to come up with her name if he’d been asked. He zipped his jacket against the chill that had come into the air.

The poor girl was splayed on the side of the road as if she was a piece of garbage someone had tossed out a window. Images of Lexa’s body by the Dumpster filled his brain. Was that part of this madman’s message? Was he somehow implying these women were trash?

Whoever he was, he couldn’t be farther from the truth.

And why was Brianna’s body so far from her car? What had persuaded her to get out and cross this road?

If it was the same person as the one who had killed Lexa and Michelle – the unsub, as Danielle referred to him – the answer was obvious. He’d somehow convinced Brianna that he needed help. What had he done? Pulled to the side of the road? Made it look like he’d been in an accident? Or had a medical emergency? Damn this man. It enraged Morgan that this monster was playing on the best and kindest instincts these women had to lure them to him. The murderer knew that Brianna and Michelle and Lexa would stop to help a total stranger. He understood their empathy and compassion. Then he used it against them.

Twilight was approaching. Morgan walked up the road to try to get his emotions under control and to see if there was anything interesting in that direction before the light failed. There wasn’t a lot he could do while the crime scene investigators were still working. Danielle had gone to be part of the group that was talking to people in the few houses along this road. Chances of them having heard anything weren’t good, but they had to cover every base.
