‘No,’ Zelia whimpered as the Jokaero calmly reached behind his back, opened the dimensional pack and removed the Diadem.

Merlek sat forward eagerly. ‘Bring it to me.’

Elise took the relic from the brainwashed Jokaero and slowly, ceremoniously ascended the steep stairs to the throne, the Diadem held in both hands.

Beside Zelia, Mekki snapped a telescopic lens over one of his eyes and peered at the back of Elise’s head.

‘Zelia Lor – look!’

Zelia was in no mood for guessing games. ‘What is it, Mekki?’

‘On the back of her neck. Do you see?’

Worried that the Necrons would think she was going for a weapon, Zelia gingerly reached for her omniscope. No one moved, their glowing eyes fixed on the tableau before them, and so, still expecting to be blasted any second, she quietly unfolded the scope and squinted through the lens.

A glint of silver beneath her mother’s hair caught her breath. She zoomed in, and confirmed the worst. A row of metal legs were clamped to Elise’s neck.

‘Elise Lor is not working for the Necrons,’ Mekki whispered. ‘She is enslaved by them, her mind shackled by a scarab.’

Zelia lowered the omniscope. ‘Just like Fleapit.’

Elise hadn’t betrayed them. She’d really thought the Emperor’s Seat was a safe haven and had no idea that the Necrons were listening, or that they’d be waiting for her, ready to transform her into their pawn.

And now she was handing a weapon of unimaginable power to the Necron Overlord. Zelia stopped herself from bolting up the steps as Merlek wrapped his metal fingers around the artefact she’d protected for so long. It would be a pointless sacrifice. The Necron guards were poised, ready to fire upon anyone who threatened their lord.

Merlek rose, holding the crown in the air.

‘This is it,’ he announced. ‘The moment we have been waiting for. Set course for the human settlement. The Transference must begin immediately!’
