DIECINUEVE

My chamber is an absolute disaster. Piles of clothing scattered across my bed, in heaps on the floor. I can’t find anything that will be suitable for tonight’s foray into the main square. The idea came to me as I sat across from Tío Hector, as I told him I wouldn’t dare pursue my suspicions further.

But I lied.

I’m going to sneak into the Gremio tonight and find the correspondence between Don Eduardo and Martina.

Just as soon as I find something appropriate to wear. Despite having never broken into a locked building, I’m nearly positive my sunny-yellow dress with its ruffled hem and embroidered collar isn’t the best attire. I let out an exasperated huff of air, annoyed at the slim offerings my wardrobe has to offer for clandestine adventures. Why must everything I own be jewel toned? Oh, that’s right—Lola won’t let me dress in anything remotely morbid-looking, which includes the color black.

“Going somewhere?”

I spin around with a gasp.

Lola leans against the doorframe, dressed in her blue nightgown adorned with far too many ribbons and an amused smile on her lips. Her gaze wanders to the piles of clothes strewn everywhere. “Ofelia is going to love this in the morning.”

A deep flush crawls across my face. “What are you doing home so early? I thought you’d still be with Guillermo.”

She rolls her eyes. “He had to make curfew.”

“Oh,” I say lamely. “Well, I’m just getting ready for bed.”

She looks around, the corners of her mouth deepening. “Are you having trouble deciding what to wear to the party your bed is clearly having?”

I throw one of my tunics at her. “Leave me be and go to sleep.”

She steps inside and shuts the door behind her. “Not until you tell me what you’re doing and why you haven’t invited me. If you’re going to a tavern, I promise I’ll purchase your first goblet of wine.”

I roll my eyes. “I’m not going out dancing—I’m going to sneak into the Gremio de Dragonadores.”

She sinks onto my bed. “That doesn’t sound nearly as fun.”

“I need to pull together a darker-hued ensemble.” I take a deep breath. “Will you help me find something?”

Lola thinks for a minute and then leaves the room. I resume tossing each of my clothes around, searching for something suitable, until she steps back inside, carrying a dark skirt and tunic. Pieces without fashion or ornate detailing, and utterly forgettable. The clothing she wears while she’s working during the day. It’s only when she hands me everything that I realize what she’s also wearing. Out of her nightgown and straight back into a similar dark skirt and simple cotton tunic.

“You’re not coming,” I say in alarm.

“Well, of course, I’d rather find a new place to dance,” Lola says. “But if anything were to happen to you, who do you think is going to run for help?”

I pull her into a hug. “Gracias, amiga.”

She sniffs. “Just as long as I’m not running several blocks.”
