Chapter Nine

“I must speak with you.”

Daniel grimaced, frustrated at being interrupted, only for it to die away at once as he saw the Earl of Ware standing by him.

“Lord Ware,” he murmured, permitting himself to be distracted from watching for Miss Graham. “Good evening.”

Lord Ware gave him a small, halfhearted smile.

“Good evening, Lord Harrogate,” he said, with forced politeness. “Might I trouble you for a few moments?”

Daniel tipped his head, studying the man.

“You have received word from the Marquess of Stratham,” he said, seeing Lord Ware nod.

Relief rushed through him, and he let out a long, heavy sigh which seemed to come from his very core. It was as if he had been holding his breath for some days, waiting until Lord Ware heard from the Marquess so that he might finally be free of any hint of wrongdoing.

“You are to be trusted, it seems,” Lord Ware remarked, although there was no broad smile nor hint of happiness at such news. “I would apologize for my doubts but, given that you had much the same about myself also, I do not feel a particular burden to do so.”

At this, Daniel let out a bark of laughter which, finally, brought a smile to Lord Ware’s face.

“I am very glad to hear it,” he said, as Lord Ware pulled out a folded piece of paper from his pocket and handed it to Daniel. “Then we are together in this?”

“We are.”

Handing the Marquess’ letter to Daniel, Lord Ware waited quietly as Daniel read it. The letter itself was brief, stating that Daniel had been tasked with finding the Duke of Abernyte in order to deliver a note that the Marquess himself had written. He had also stated that Daniel was to be trusted and made the suggestion that they might work together, alongside the Duke of Abernyte. The letter was finished with the statement that the Marquess appreciated all that the Earl of Ware was doing in making sure that the danger from the possible French invasion was countered. He pressed him to continue being vigilant and ended with the usual wishes for his health and his family. Daniel folded up the letter and returned it, looking at the Earl of Ware with fresh eyes.

“Lord Stratham does not realize that the letter has not been delivered,” Daniel said, lifting his head to see Lord Ware nod. “That is why he has tasked us with working alongside the Duke in whatever endeavors he is involved in at present.” He waited until Lord Ware looked back at him before he spoke again. “Might I ask for your support in this matter, Lord Ware?” he said, the noise of the ballroom almost stealing his words before they reached Lord Ware’s ears. “Neither of us, it seems, are working in support of the French!”

Lord Ware chuckled and all of the fragments of remaining tension fled.

“Indeed, we are not,” he agreed. “I am very glad of that fact, I will admit. Yes, I would be glad to help you.
