CHAPTER TWELVE

CARTER FELL ASLEEP within minutes after they buckled him into the back seat of Max’s car. The poor kid had had a long night. After Shelby’s other guests had left, she had enlisted Carter’s help in making a batch of cookies to take home with him. When he proudly handed them over to his mother, Rikki had given him a big hug.

She’d made the decision not to tell Carter about what had happened other than to say that there was a problem at the house, and they were staying at a hotel until she could get someone in tomorrow to make repairs. He’d accepted the explanation with no questions other than to ask Max if he’d be staying at the same hotel.

Right now, Max watched as she briefly twisted around to check on Carter. Sighing, she turned back to look out into the night. “Poor guy, he’s worn out. Sounds like he and the other kids had a good time with Shelby. I really dread telling him about what happened to the pirate ship. I can’t understand why anyone would do something so mean.”

Max was mad about it, too. Absolutely furious, actually. “He’ll be upset, but we’ll have a replacement within the next forty-eight hours. And like I said earlier, we can start on the other set while we wait for the new pirate ship to arrive.”

Rikki offered him a half-hearted smile. “I know it won’t do any good to say that you really don’t have to buy another one. He’ll understand.”

That was not happening. “I can afford it, and I won’t let anyone spoil our fun. Besides, having that to look forward to will give him something to focus on besides knowing a bad guy was in your house.”

While he spoke, he watched her out of the corner of his eye. The ambient lighting from the dashboard emphasized the tense set of her jawline and how her eyebrows rode low over her eyes as she worried about what tomorrow would bring. Might as well get a tough discussion out of the way while they were alone. Well, except for the sleeping boy in the back seat.

“You were worried that neither Cade nor I would believe you about the money you got from your landlord.”

She kept her gaze pinned on the road stretched out in front of them. “No one ever does.”

Max pointed out the obvious. “The attorney clearly did, and you said your professor stood up for you.”

“Yeah, but that’s two out of who knows how many. After all this time, I still can’t believe my boss at the hotel believed I was lying about it. I thought we were friends.”

He didn’t blame her for feeling bitter. “Actually, four people believe you if you count me and Cade. You also have Titus on your side, so that makes five. I realize you don’t want to broadcast the situation all over creation, but the people who really know you would believe you.”

She finally turned to face him. “That’s just it.
