Chapter twenty-two

Kelsey

The first step out of the car and towards my house is difficult. Now that Mason’s back, all I can see are the memories we made here.

The living room reminds me of all the times we cuddled up on the couch and watched movies or took naps together. The kitchen brings back memories of Mason standing by the stove making me breakfast, sometimes completely naked. Those were the best mornings. They always ended with post-pancake sex, normally on the kitchen counter.

The bathroom gives me flashbacks of being sick and Mason climbing into the shower to help me wash my hair and bring my fever down. But it’s our bedroom that kills me. I spent so many nights in this bed with him. His clothes still occupy one half of the closet and his cologne was never moved off the dresser.

In our bedroom, it’s like Mason never left.

“Are you ok?” Wes grips my elbow and helps me climb the few steps from the driveway to the front door.

My body is weak and still bruised. I was only fed what Mason could smuggle in and was barely given any water. Most of it I threw up or I couldn’t eat because the pain was too strong.

“Yeah… just dealing with some things,” I mutter quietly enough that Walker can't hear me.

“You know, just because you moved on, doesn’t mean you can't change your mind about it.”

I pause and stare up at my brother. Sometimes it’s annoying how well he knows me and how he can tell what I'm thinking about, but other times it’s just what I need.

“No matter what I do I’m going to break someone’s heart.”

“Well, then make sure you don’t make the wrong decision and break two,” his deep voice rumbles over me. I furrow my brows and try to figure out what he’s talking about.

“How would I break two hearts?”

“You can break your own if you don’t pick the right man.” He kisses my forehead like he always does and tells me to sit my ass down.

“Do you need anything?” Walker drops my bag from the hospital by the door. “A drink? Food?”

“Water would be great. Thanks.”

Walker nods his head and disappears into the kitchen.

“I’m going to leave. But if you need anything, call me. Actually, you could call anyone and they’ll come running.” He emphasizes anyone and I almost roll my eyes at him.

Wes isn't pushing Mason on me. He just wants to make sure I do what’s best for myself. The problem is, I don’t know what that is.

“Thank you, for everything you’ve done. For searching for me. For sitting with me at the hospital. For being the best brother a girl could ask for. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

“Clearly, you’d be a mess of a woman,” he deadpans.

“I'm pretty sure I am either way. Go enjoy your family and give those little babies some hugs from their favorite aunt.”

“Yeah, I’m going to tell my thirteen-year-old daughter that you called her a little baby.
