Later that evening it began to rain again and the wounded were moved to the Cobb house porch. Baldwin noticed Cpl. George W. Manville of Company E, 15th Connecticut, who sat on the porch with his back against the house. Baldwin approached him to check his wounds: “His breast was exposed, and I saw in it a ghastly hole, from which blood oozed at every breath.”114

Not all of the wounded were fortunate enough to receive immediate care. Many were grievously injured and unable to move. As the fighting shifted to other parts of the battlefield, the fallen had been left behind. Some waited for help for hours, bleeding and suffering from exposure to the elements. Private Pendleton of the 27th Massachusetts remained on the field all the night and was not recovered until the following morning.115

Captain Bassett of the 15th Connecticut was brought off the field and placed in one of the small cabins outside the Cobb house. Baldwin discovered the young officer in a terrible state. Realizing death was near, the private brought water to ease the man’s parched throat. With many requiring care, Baldwin left to attend others.

About 10:00 p.m., wagons arrived along with orders to move the wounded “Yanks” to Kinston. Baldwin assisted in loading the wagons, finishing by 1:00 a.m. Before departing, Baldwin paid one last visit to the shanty where he had left Bassett. “I saw him outside, dead, and divested of his uniform.”116
