“Your ute should be fine here until morning. It’s tied down tight. Get in the back of the police car, and we’ll take you back to town.” The police officer opened the door at the back of the police car for the children and Iain. “No one’s going to notice it here after dark. Probably safer if you stay in town tonight, with idiots like that loan shark’s henchmen about.”

“I’m not happy about leaving my ute unattended here.” Iain shook his head but stepped into the back of the police car after the children.

“There’s a pub and a few boarding houses in town, and we can run you back for your ute in the morning.”

“They weren’t out to kill anyone, just scare them.” Iain gave Emily a squeeze. “Are you fine; not still frightened?”

“I’m fine, Uncle.” She hugged him.

Iain sighed. “It’s over.” He leaned forward, his head and shoulders over the top of the seat between the two police officers. “I’ll talk to you once I’ve found a room where I can leave the children safely and organise to get my ute driven into town. I’ll find the police station and come to get my finger photographed, stitched and make a statement. By that time, if the children are asleep, I’ll be ready for a beer. Then I’m going to crash in bed.”

Looking and seeing that Emily was asleep, he muttered to Jarrah, his eyes intent on watching Emily’s rhythmical sleep breathing, “Damn Peter, for what he’s putting his family through. There’s no way a kid of that age should have witnessed any of this.”

Jarrah supported Emily’s head, his arm around her shoulder. He nodded his head, his brown eyes expressing his concern.

The police let the three of them out at the corner beside the police station and pointed him in the direction of the service station and hotel. “See you once you get those kids settled in somewhere.”
