âThereâs something we need to do first.â She handed him the letter.
His brow furrowed then smoothed as he read the faded ink. âI hoped you would never have to read this. So many times I broke the pen in my hands as I struggled to put down each sentence. There I was penning a goodbye letter on our honeymoon. What man should be forced to do that?â
âI hated it at first. I hated you for writing it and for telling me I could only read it should the worst come. I wanted to give up, but thisââshe touched the cornerââKept me alive. Now youâre here with me, and I no longer need ink stains to force me to go on.â
Cupping her hand under his, she guided him over to the flames. The paper glowed orange as it wavered over the heat. Jackâs fingers spread wide and the paper tipped into the fire. It blazed bright for an instant, then curled black at the edges. Ten years of sadness, longing, anger, and desperation crumbled to ash.
Jackâs arms circled her and pulled her close to face him. His forehead leaned against hers, and she watched as the firelight turned to blue flames in his eyes. Heated and alive, it burned through her like a living flame. She could burn alive from his touch and never heed the consummation.
His hand moved up her back, over her shoulder, and trailed up her neck. Cradling her face, he touched his lips to hers. Gentle at first and then as if a great urgency broke free of its restraints. His mouth was her sanctuary, and she gave in instinctually, offering as much as was demanded. If theyâd possessed the capability to look down from above, they might have noticed their melded shadow on the ground, its edges brightly lit and shimmering.
As it was, they were too engaged to notice.
