A Kiss
Niamh stood inside the millinerâs shop the next day looking at hats and other accessories. She wasnât going to buy anything for herself, of course. She had found an ideal excuse and escorted Aileen to pick out more things for her trousseau. Somerset told her during the ride last morning that his party would be going into town to explore the shops. What sophisticated ladies coming from London could want in stuffy Carlisle shops, she didnât know. But it was perfect for her to get out from under the watchful eyes of her uncle and take her cousin shopping while she met her fake suitor.
Aileen was picking out hats and shawls and giddily hopping around the store. Niamh, in the meantime, walked aimlessly about the shop, looking out the window from time to time not to miss the duke and his party.
Niamh came closer to the window display with some gloves on them and sighed. She instinctively balled her hands into fists, hiding her almost transparent fingertips on her own gloves.
Thatâs all right, she told herself. As soon as she moved to Ireland and took ownership of her grandmotherâs bookshop, sheâd be able to afford her own accessories. Usually, those kinds of thoughts brightened her mood. She missed her home country, and the thought of a beloved old bookstore never failed to warm her. And now, she had actual means to make that dream a reality. But just as she thought it, she shivered slightly from the draft and burrowed further into the cape.
His cape. She inhaled the fresh scent of Somersetâs perfume and body and sighed. This was as close as sheâd get to feel the man himself. It was uncanny, these feelings she had toward him. Sheâd known him but five days and they had spent little time together, but she spent quite a lot of time in-between their short meetings thinking about him. About his powerful hands, his deep voice, his husky laughter, and pleasant masculine scent. Last night, she even spent half the night imagining his kisses. The wretched man planted the thoughts in her head with his passing jest. Surely, heâd spared no thought for her, and here she was dreaming about his lips, the searing heat of his touchâ
She shook her head as if to dislodge the thoughts from her mind. Not that it ever helped. In the corner, a beautiful pair of gloves caught her eyes. She shifted and placed her hands on the window to angle her body for a better view.
They were white with ornate blossoms embroidered with a golden thread, starting from a small finger and leading all the way to the elbow. She had never seen anything so beautiful. And she thought they would look lovely with her golden gown, the one sheâd been mending for the dukeâs grand ball. She licked her lips and dropped her torso lower, admiring the craftsmanship of the gloves.
âWhat is so interesting there that youâre about to topple over in order to have a better look?â
Niamh started with a screech.
